A note about Sergei Bondarchuk

When I think about Sergei Bondarchuk's work, I first of all remember the appearance of his characters. It is noteworthy that in the best of the images created by the actor — in Taras Shevchenko and Othello, in Pierre Bezukhov and Andrei Sokolov, in Chekhov's doctors Dymov and Astrov — the presence of himself is invariably revealed. Although in none of them, even if we limit ourselves so far to the appearance of these characters, there is no repetition or attempt to simplify, to reduce, as one of the critics says, "individual makeup to the performer's own face." (According to some critics, the modern actor begins with the rejection of external reincarnation.)

So, on the one hand, there is a very pronounced individuality of the artist himself, imperiously emerging in each of his creations. On the other hand, the constant striving not only for internal, but also for external reincarnation, concern for those means of expression that are now declared almost obsolete by some adherents of the "modern style" of acting. Where does this contradiction come from? Is there even a contradiction here?

Really, it's worth looking into. Especially if we recall what, in fact, is the essence of the debate unfolding today around this concept — the modern actor?, Isn't this the essence that in K. S. Stanislavsky's famous formula "to go from oneself to the image" some theorists and practitioners of theater and cinema perceive only words — from themselves, and others, remembering that they should go away from themselves, understand that it is necessary to go not somewhere, but necessarily to the image. But what does it mean to go to the image? What aesthetic problem lies behind the contrast that we have just outlined? To understand this, let us recall that if, from the point of view of some, the modernity of acting necessarily consists in a simple personal coincidence of the actor with the role, since this, they believe, is the self-expression and then self-affirmation of the artist's creative individuality, then from the point of view of others, the measure of the modernity of the actor's art is manifested in the creation of an image, through which, for all its objectivity, the artist's approach and attitude to the image itself, that is, to the character he embodies, and to life, will reveal the personality of the creator himself.

At one time, Belinsky wrote about the dialectical unity of acting, manifested both in the inevitable dependence of the actor on the image given to him by the playwright, and in the independence, freedom of acting. So what kind of understanding and interpretation of the concept of "modern actor" will he, an actor, rise, expand as a person, gain greater freedom and independence, despite the fact that, starting from the image given to him by the author, the actor creates his own qualitatively new image every time, in no way repeating himself — his fate and his character, — nor the images created by him earlier? Or at the same time, when he will simply adapt himself, unchanged in nothing, to the framework of the role?

Sergei Bondarchuk is not an outside observer in this dispute. His view on the essence of the problem is definite and active. "The roots that feed the actor's experience as the author of the image," he says in the article "Director and actor in the work on the image," are primarily in his worldview, in his life experience, in creative imagination, which allow him to penetrate into the life of the image from certain ideological and creative positions. Consequently, these roots are deeper than the material of the role and the proposed circumstances. The actor must preserve his individuality, reveal his attitude to the created image."
